Congratulations!!! This was an important vote by roughly 85% of our voting Texas homeowners on May 7, 2022. We took the opportunity to vote yes for Proposition 2. This result is a constitutional change that increases our homestead exemption from $25,000 - $40,000 and has the potential to save the average homeowner approximately $180 on our next tax bill in October.
What did Proposition 2 change about property tax exemptions?
Proposition 2 increased our Texas property tax exemption for school district property taxes from $25,000 - $40,000. The new exemption rate takes effect as of January 2, 2022.
What is the downside of this exemption increase?
Texas lawmakers estimate that the exemption increase will cost the state of Texas $355 million in 2023.
